Autumn Feels and Changes Afoot!
Despite the warm weather, Autumn is definitely happening. I know, dog walks with Pip are often in the dark, I have to remember my torch. Others changes are also happening. Look you will see.
The air feels different, the light is casting a different glow, the wind has a cooler edge, nature is preparing for some down time. How lucky is most of the natural world. To be able to take winter off. To sit back and rest. Allow the dark and cold to pass us by. To wait with calm and patience for the light to come back, for the air to warm again.
I was walking with a friend. We stopped for coffee and home made energy bars. Sat and looked out over the trees down the valley. The air still, just warm enough to be able to sit for a while. Cloudy but bright, Autumn very much in the air. Cool air that has slightly metallic taste as we breathe deep.
The ground cool and damp, seeping up despite sitting on jackets. Fungi appearing in the woods, in the grass and under the trees sprouting many different types. All looking wonderful and weird. I do love the shapes and styles. So much variety and how do they choose what shape they are going to be?
These sensations add to the feeling of the year moving on, time passing us by. The days of summer left behind as we speed on towards winter. The trees turning colour, green leaves not so vibrant. Change is happening all around.
The view is misty and damp from the recent rain. We move on, chilled from sitting, to warm up. As we pass through the trees we look for more fungi. The air filled with sounds. The trees busy with life. Birds singing and calling, the Robins making their presence felt when you pass through their patch. Probably some squirrels collecting and storing winter food. The air smells different, you can taste it and feel the cold entering your lungs and body. We become filled with Autumn spores and decay. Autumn is really an assault on our senses. We notice it with all our senses and our body.
The trees may look as if they are shutting down, but first they prepare for the spring. Buds and catkins are produced and then set still to wait the return of the warmth and sunlight again. Whatever triggers that new activity is being prepared for now. Look and you can see, Alder, hazel, beech, all working hard.
So maybe we have make sure that we take these moments of rest. Make sure we grab some light when we are busy with other things. Do not forget to rejoice in the Autumn and find time to absorb some of natures late energy. It is still there evident in the woods. Today there was a dell filled with holly, beech, oaks and rhododendrons, it was buzzing with tree energy. No, nature is not finished yet, there is still plenty going on. Go experience this season and open up all your senses. They will each give you some different of this magical time of year
